Film selector
Films are used in more than 25 forms in FDM online.
Based on the statement that the quantity of films can exceed some hundreds, we had decided don't use traditional list combo box. We used the text-based film selector.
Today we have two different film selectors that working both.
Tab key based
Type in first letters of film title
As soon as you see right title on the right text label – hit Tab key on keyboard
Well, the film title will be selected and you can continue with work
Despite of simplicity of this method it had essential lacks:
Confusing of user for titles with “THE” (“THE DILEMME”, “THE AMERICAN”) – user was typing “AME” instead of “THE AMER”, and this was a long way to remember that the film have the article “THE” in the beginning.
Too many keys should be entered if the film have “THE” article in its beginning.
When two films have very similar titles – user should enter almost all title, for example, “MADAGASKAR” and “MADAGASKAR 2”.
JQueryUI autocomplete
Improved selector like is used in the Google search.
Type in the part of the film title
Select an appropriate film title from the list of titles
In comparing with prevoius variant the advantages
User will never confused with title with “THE” article in beginning. For example, typed “DIL” will show film title “THE DILEMME” that will be selected very quick
User can enter any part of any title for quick selection, for example, type “DJ” to select “ADJUSTMENT BUREAU”
If user unintentionally forgot the film title – he can see all titles and select needed title from the list, just type most used letter like “A” (or “E”, or “I”, not so many variants)
Compatibility
Although the library JQueryUI is known as an universal and applicable with any browser we found that the updated film selector is not working with IE 7.0. But old-styled film selector is working ok. Therefore if you'll find the incompatibility with your hardware – please use Tab key based selection.
